VOIVOD's AWAY And SNAKE Pay Tribute To Fallen Guitarist: Video Available
September 24, 2005VOIVOD drummer Michel "Away" Langevin and singer Denis "Snake" Belanger paid tribute to late VOIVOD guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour on the "Top Rock de Babu" program on the Quebec music channel MusiquePlus on Thursday, September 22. Watch a seven-minute video clip containing the interview footage from the show (in French) at the VOIVOD fan site Voivodfan.com: Windows Media, Real Media.
As previously reported, a tribute night to Piggy is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 24 at club Saphir in Montreal, with all the proceeds from the show set to benefit the cancer research society of Quebec. Confirmed bands include DOOK and A PSYCHO VOYAGE THROUGH HELL (which had previously featured in its ranks VOIVOD's road manager "G"). Lots of VOIVOD music will be played between and after the bands, as well as selections from artists that Piggy enjoyed listening to, according to those that knew him. A MySpace.com group, "Piggy RIP", was also launched where fans can discuss Piggy's musical and personal accomplishments. Check it out at this location.
D'Amour died Aug. 26 in a Montreal hospital from complications of advanced colon cancer. The surviving VOIVOD members —Snake, Away and bassist Jason "Jasonic" Newsted (ex-METALLICA) — will return to the recording studio in late September to resume work on their 14th album, tentatively due in early 2006 via The End Records.
Only hours before he slipped into a coma due to complications from colon cancer, D'Amour gave Langevin instructions to go to the guitarist's personal computer and retrieve the final guitar tracks Piggy had been working on for the upcoming CD. According to Snake, the album will be "the definitive VOIVOD" effort. "I am sure that Piggy would trust us to complete the project as a tribute to him."
